Las Vegas, NV (PRWEB) March 04, 2015

In the Ultimate Fighting Championship, each event is only as good as the fight that is the main event. For UFC 189, just one official fight has been announced and that fight will be for the UFC Featherweight Championship. Brazilian champion Jose Junior Aldo will defend his title against the brash, often out-spoken native of Ireland, Conor Notorious McGregor. UFC 189 will take place on July 11 from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, NV.

When it comes to the featherweight division in the UFC, Aldo (25-1) is the only man that has ever worn the title belt around his waist. He was the last featherweight champion at World Extreme Cagefighting and when the UFC absorbed the lighter weight classes from that organization, Aldos title reign was transferred over. He wasnt only given the title belt when he came to the UFC, he has defended it against each fighter put in front of him and has done it handily.

Since he came to the United States to compete in WEC, Aldo has won 15 straight fights including 7 in the UFC and 18 straight overall. Since becoming the UFC champion, Aldo has beaten some of the best including Frankie Edgar, Kenny Florian, Chad Mendes twice, and Ricardo Lamas. In many of his fights, he has easily handled his opponents, while others have seen a little less action, much to the dismay of some fans. That is where the fight with McGregor will become his greatest test to date.

McGregor (17-2) has appeared in just five fights in the UFC and has turned into one of the biggest draws in the company. In his first fight in the UFC, he defeated Marcus Brimage via first round TKO and won his next fight via unanimous decision against Max Holloway. It has been his last three fights that his stock has grown to historic levels.

Fighting in front of a hometown crowd in Dublin, Ireland, he earned a TKO finish in the first round against another Brazilian, Diego Brandao. In his next fight, back in the United States, the fans in Las Vegas were just as excited to see him fight, and beat, Dustin Poirier via TKO at 1:46 of the first round. In January, McGregor won his 13th straight fight after finishing German Dennis Siver in the second round via TKO. All three of his last performances earned him Performance of the Night honors and propelled him towards Aldo and the UFC title.

UFC 189 will emanate from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The venue, which originally opened in 1993, has seen many of the biggest fights in the history of the UFC including Anderson Silva vs. Chael Sonnen 2, Randy Couture vs. Brock Lesnar, Georges St-Pierre vs. B.J. Penn 2, Quinton Rampage Jackson vs. Rashad Evans, Junior dos Santos vs. Cain Velasquez, and most recently, Silva vs. Nick Diaz. The fight between Aldo and McGregor will join the list of historic fights to take place here.
